LOS ANGELES (AP) — Omi (OH’-mee) did not expect the song “Cheerleader” to be a hit because he did not expect it to be a song. Omi says it was just supposed to be an interlude on his album. He woke up with the melody in his head about seven or eight years ago and wrote it as a metaphor for people who are in your corner. He says the fact that it’s a hit in the U.S. when he’s from Jamaica is a “monumental” moment for him.
