The Question
Hi Karen,
I have taken a poll with all my girlfriends on this dilemma and now I want your opinion.
I have a friend or should say an acquaintance that is getting married January 2nd in New Hampshire. I live on the Cape in Brewster.
She knows I’ve been dating someone for the past 6 months…it’s serious and she knows that. I just received the invitation to her wedding and it didn’t say “and guest” I do understand people have to cut their guests lists down to accommodate their closest friends and relatives.
My gripe is…she knows the guy I’m dating is not a “fling” and putting that aside this wedding is gonna be an extension of New Years Eve and the entire holiday season… so I feel like it’ll be a little more special and I don’t want to be alone….AND never mind all that but we could have a blizzard that weekend and knowing that’s a possibility you would think she would invite my boyfriend so I won’t be put in a position to potentially be caught it a snowstorm driving by myself.
What do you think I should do? Stay home or go to the wedding?

Karen’s Response
Danielle,
First of all…you said she was more like an acquaintance. If she were a really good friend I am sure she would have made room for your guest and been considerate enough to think of how far you would be driving and the possible inclement weather conditions.
If you really want to go to this wedding maybe you could ask the bride if your boyfriend could come after the dinner…for the dancing. I can’t imagine her saying “no” to that. There would be no reason to.
If by chance she should say “no” I would send her a gift and NOT go to the wedding. She’s not that close a friend…you’d have to go alone…AND I am assuming stay the night in a hotel. The night might not be worth it.
I would stay home light the fireplace and snuggle up with your boyfriend on the couch.
Let me know how it all turns out.
